Elint Waste Management Portal Case Study
Client Overview:
Elint, owned by SHEQ Consultants, is a compliance software designed primarily for the medical waste industry.
It facilitates the management of medical waste between healthcare providers and waste removal services, ensuring compliance with ISO 9001 standards and other regulations.
Client’s Challenge:
A major medical waste company was not compliant with international waste management standards, leading to a hefty fine of 100 million SA Rands.
This client needed a solution so they sought out the services of SHEQ consultants, but this led to SHEQ employing dozens of expensive consultants on a regular basis, eating up the profit margins and opening the door for human error.
SHEQ consultants then came up with an idea!
An efficient, compliant system to manage waste processes for this major client, as the existing procedures were requiring plenty of manual hours and expenses.
The software idea was called Elint. Elint was initially developed by another developer without using any framework, producing a rough and unstructured code, resulting in challenges in adding features consistently.
The Solution:
Implementation Process:
- Assessment and Planning: Co-Foundry assessed the existing code and identified areas that needed restructuring. A detailed project plan was developed, outlining the migration to the Laravel framework and the development of new features.
- Framework Implementation: Over six months, Co-Foundry converted the existing PHP-based system to the Laravel framework. This included rewriting and optimising the code to improve performance and maintainability.
- Feature Development: New features were developed to automate manual processes, such as form submissions, notifications, and secure digital storage of records.
- System Generalisation: Co-Foundry made the system more versatile by generalising it to accommodate multiple clients instead of just one, allowing SHEQ Consultants to expand their client base.
- Testing and Deployment: Rigorous testing was conducted to ensure the system’s functionality, security, and compliance. The system was then deployed in a phased manner to minimise disruption.
- Long term maintenance & improvements: For a while after the system was developed, Co-Foundry remained in contract with SHEQ Consultants to maintain, adjust and improve ELINT as needed.
Outcome:
The implementation of the Laravel framework transformed Elint into a robust, scalable, and compliant system. Key outcomes included:
- Compliance: The system ensured compliance with international waste management standards, preventing further fines and improving safety for its clients.
- Automation: Manual processes were largely automated, significantly reducing the need for manual oversight by SHEQ Consultants.
